Rishabh Pant Surpasses Shubman Gill to Become India’s Highest Run-Scorer in WTC History

Rishabh Pant has added another major achievement to his growing list of Test cricket records. The Indian wicketkeeper-batter has surpassed Shubman Gill to become India’s highest run-scorer in ICC World Test Championship (WTC) history. Pant reached the landmark during the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo, underlining his importance to India's Test setup.

The milestone is particularly significant because Pant has continued to produce important performances despite missing a considerable period of Test cricket earlier in his career. His ability to score quickly while also contributing as a wicketkeeper has made him one of India's most valuable players in the longest format.

Rishabh Pant Becomes India’s Leading WTC Run-Scorer

Pant entered the IND vs SL 2nd Test needing only a relatively small contribution to move ahead of Gill's tally. He scored 63 runs in Colombo, taking his overall WTC tally to 2,948 runs from 42 Tests.

Before Pant's innings, Shubman Gill held the record with 2,917 runs from 42 matches. Pant therefore moved ahead of the current India captain by 31 runs, taking the top position on India's all-time WTC run-scoring chart.

This achievement highlights Pant's remarkable consistency in Test cricket. His aggressive batting style has often allowed him to change the momentum of matches, while his ability to perform under pressure has made him a key component of India's Test side.

Shubman Gill’s Impressive WTC Record

Although Pant has now taken the No. 1 position, Shubman Gill's record remains an impressive achievement. Gill had previously climbed to the top of India's WTC run-scoring charts after surpassing several established Indian stars, including Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Gill's rise has been particularly notable because of his consistency across multiple WTC cycles. His ability to score big hundreds and play long innings has established him as one of India's leading Test batters.

The latest change at the top demonstrates how quickly India's WTC records can evolve as the current generation continues to accumulate runs.

Pant’s Record-Breaking Test Career

Pant's latest WTC milestone is another chapter in an already remarkable Test career. The left-handed batter has developed a reputation for attacking even established bowling attacks and producing counter-attacking innings when India are under pressure.

During the Colombo Test, Pant also reached another significant milestone by moving past MS Dhoni's tally of runs as an Indian designated wicketkeeper in away or neutral Tests. His aggressive approach has helped him establish a distinctive identity among India's wicketkeeper-batters.

Pant's performance has also contributed to his standing among the most prolific six-hitters in Test cricket. His attacking batting continues to make him a unique threat in the longest format.

India’s Top WTC Run-Scorers

With Pant now leading the chart, the list of India's leading WTC run-scorers features several modern-day greats. Pant has 2,948 runs, followed by Gill with 2,917. Rohit Sharma is third with 2,716 runs, while Ravindra Jadeja has 2,675 and Virat Kohli finished his WTC career with 2,617 runs. Yashasvi Jaiswal is another prominent name among India's current generation.

A New Milestone for Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant surpassing Shubman Gill is more than just a statistical achievement. It reflects his long-term impact on Indian Test cricket and his ability to consistently contribute with the bat.

With 2,948 WTC runs, Pant now has another major record attached to his name. As India continues its WTC campaign, the challenge will be to extend that lead and potentially move even higher among the world's all-time leading WTC run-scorers. For Indian cricket, Pant's latest milestone is another reminder of the extraordinary impact he has had in Test cricket.
